The Golden Bear Hunt

Bess Martin has hidden 500 handmade clay bears around Kirklees for people to find between July and November 2015

www.bessinabout.com

Bess makes artistic trails and treasure hunts and can turn her hand to just about anything – making costumes for stiltwalkers, woodturning, pottery, painting and embroidery for starters. We were impressed by the balance between adult intelligence and childlike curiosity in Bess’s work – and of course her ambitious plans to hide golden bears all over Kirklees with a series of clues and surprises to keep adults and children guessing. Will you find a golden bear?

Look out for clues both locally and on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (search ‘bessinabout’) and follow her walking blog as she attempts to tread as many of the Kirklees footpaths as possible – spreading the bears far and wide.

A walking adventure that invites families to take a journey through Oakwell Country Park, using a set of playfully incomplete and poetic directions to find ‘the perfect place to hide.’ Artist Sorrel Muggridge devises site-specific walks that invite us to intertwine our ideas, experiences and imagination with the place we are in and to re-explore our landscape from a fresh perspective.

Sorrel will be at Oakwell Hall as part of our Bear Hunting Day to set you off on your adventure and share with her the special hiding place you find. After the 23rd you will be able to return to Oakwell Hall and use her directions any time you like – either pick up a printed copy or use the QR codes on site to access a digital version.

A performance of Lang Wudu by the distinctive Hilary Step Saxophone Quartet and an optional pre-performance walk.

Alexander believes that ‘where words fail, music speaks’ and, inspired by the fascinating story of the unemployed workers who built Nab End tower for nothing more than pleasure, the story of Longwood Thump and the Longwood Sing, he has pushed usual boundaries to create a rare composition for a saxophone quartet.

Join Alexander for:

A chance to explore the site and hear about how he devised ‘Lang Wudu’ – with a stop on the ridge for a delicious afternoon tea at the uniquely quirky Edge Accommodation.
